‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen,’ Plus 6 Things to Watch on TV This Week

Between streaming and cable, viewers have a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, March 23-29. Details and times are subject to change.

Spiraling …

The series “Bait” takes place over the course of just four days, and serves as a reminder that it doesn’t take very long for multiple things to completely spin out of control. The comedian Riz Ahmed stars as Shah Latif, a struggling actor who is looking for his big break. But as he is preparing for a potentially life-changing audition, he ends up fighting with family and an ex-lover. Begins streaming Wednesday on Prime Video.

According to the showrunner Haley Z. Boston of the new horror series “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen,” the vibes are a mix between “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Carrie,” so if you want to feel unsettling tension that makes your skin crawl, this show might be for you. Adam DiMarco (“White Lotus”) and Camila Morrone (“Daisy Jones & the Six”) play Nicky and Rachel, a couple who are in the week leading up to their wedding. There will be bubbling fears of commitment and, as the title indicates, it won’t be a fairy-tale ending. All eight episodes will air at once. Begins streaming Thursday on Netflix.

Anniversaries for two performers

Young millennials, get ready to feel old: It was 20 years ago that Miley Cyrus donned a blonde wig with blunt bangs and lived a double life as Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana. And now, Cyrus is back to celebrate in the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special.” There will be new behind-the-scenes footage and recreations of key set pieces (I personally think about Hannah’s rotating closet about once a week); Alex Cooper, the host of the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” will interview Cyrus in front of a live studio audience. Begins streaming Tuesday on Disney+.

Martha Graham, who was named by Time magazine as “Dancer of the Century,” opened her dance company 100 years ago in a small space in Carnegie Hall. Over the course of her career, she created scores of ballet and dance techniques that have become mainstays in the medium. Now, to honor her legacy, the two-part documentary series “Martha Graham Dance Company: We Are Our Time” shares behind-the-scenes stories about Graham and the studio, and Meryl Streep narrates Graham’s words and spotlights her dances. Friday at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings).

A friendly road trip, a hostile work environment and a dirty sport

The duo Lee Seo-jin and Nah Yung-suk are both South Korean reality stars (they collaborated on the series “Grandpas Over Flowers” and “Three Meals a Day”), but they are also best friends. Together, for “Ready or Not: Texas,” the two head to the Lone Star State without any plans made or research done to explore what the state has to offer. Begins streaming Tuesday on Netflix.

After the success of “Heated Rivalry,” it seems like a good idea to keep an eye on what sports shows are coming out of Canada. The newest sports series from the Great White North, “Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story,” is a fictionalized version of the very real story of the Canadian sprinter who won the gold medal in the 100-meter final at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, but produced a positive drug test three days later and was disqualified. This led to a widespread investigation into doping, and the event he won was labeled “the dirtiest race in history” since only two out of the eight runners who had participated had never had a positive drug test. The six-part series follows Johnson (Shamier Anderson) as he self-funds a documentary in hopes of sharing his side of the story. Begins streaming Friday on Paramount+.

If the reality show “Below Deck” taught us anything, it’s that behind the scenes of a luxurious vacation, there is endless drama happening with the staff. And that is the premise of the French-language series “Privileges.” The show follows Adèle, a prison inmate who, through a day-habilitation program, secures a job at Citadel, a luxurious Parisian hotel. The psychological thriller then dives into the power structures between staff and guests and the sinister happenings at the hotel. Begins streaming on Friday on HBO Max.
