Some D.C.-area schools to dismiss early or teach remotely due to Monday storms

Several D.C.-area school systems plan to dismiss classes early Monday or switch to remote learning ahead of a storm system that could bring heavy rain, damaging winds and, possibly, tornadoes to the region.

Other districts said they are monitoring conditions and could announce changes later, if necessary.

The Capital Weather Gang predictsthat storms are most probable between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., but some could begin earlier in the day.

Fairfax County Public Schools plans close three hours early. But, the school system said in an alert on its websitethat, “Should it become unsafe to release students early, we will hold them at school until a safe release is possible.”

Announced schedule changes for Monday

  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Dismissing two hours early.
  • Culpeper County Public Schools: Closed; 12-month employees must report on time.

  • Montgomery County Public Schools: High schools to dismiss at noon (Northwood HS at 11:40 a.m.) and middle schools at 12:30 p.m. Elementary schools that begin at 9 a.m. will dismiss at 12:55 p.m., and those that begin at 9:25 a.m. will end at 1:20 p.m. Local field trips are canceled.
