College football on TV: Making the most of a less-than-stellar Saturday

Only two weeks remain in college football’s regular season, and quite frankly, this Saturday is not the more compelling one. Many of the SEC’s best teams are giving themselves pseudo bye weeks with late-season matchups against lower-tier nonconference opponents, and the sport’s best rivalry games are saved for Thanksgiving week.

There are still a handful of games on Saturday’s docket that are worth watching, but even the best matchups are a tick below what we have become accustomed to in recent weeks.

Listed below is every game that will be broadcast on television Saturday, plus some intel on a notable matchup in each time slot. What will you be watching?

All times Eastern.

Early afternoon

In the spotlight: Missouri at Oklahoma

Oklahoma played itself back into playoff position with impressive victories at Tennessee and at Alabama in its two most recent games, and now the Sooners simply have to win a pair of home games against Missouri and LSU to secure their first playoff berth since 2019. The first of those two sets of Tigers presents the bigger challenge, even if Missouri is probably going to have to start its third-string quarterback again because of injuries. Missouri averages 241.7 rushing yards, which is sixth best in the country. Can Oklahoma’s fourth-ranked rushing defense slow it down?

Midafternoon

In the spotlight: USC at Oregon

The longtime Pac-12 rivals meet for the first time as members of the Big Ten, and plenty is at stake for both teams. Oregon has a clean path to a second straight playoff berth, and all it needs to do is win here and against rival Washington next week to secure its spot and probably a home game in the first round. A loss wouldn’t be disqualifying, but it would lead to some tense days in Eugene as the Ducks waited to see how much the selection committee docked them. USC, meanwhile, is on the fringe of the playoff conversation, and its only chance to keep itself in consideration is to pull off an upset here before beating rival UCLA in its season finale.

Prime time

In the spotlight: BYU at Cincinnati

It’s not a good prime-time slate. But BYU is the first team out of the current playoff field, and so the Cougars have a lot to play for. The only way they can give themselves a chance is to win their final two regular season games to secure a spot in the Big 12 championship game. If they get there, even a second loss to Texas Tech might be too much to overcome. But if they don’t get there, they have no chance of sneaking in. Cincinnati entered November with playoff dreams of its own, but two consecutive losses have left the Bearcats playing the role of spoiler here instead.
