Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened “elimination” to anyone selected as Iran’s next supreme leader, as Tehran moved closer to appointing a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei’s funeral, which had been planned for Wednesday, was delayed “until further notice,” state media reported, to allow Iranians time to travel to Tehran. The war escalated along multiple fronts Wednesday, as Israel struck Iranian targets belonging to a volunteer paramilitary force that played a role in the crackdown on anti-government protests in January and urged civilians in a large swath of southern Lebanon to flee. Iran again launched a fresh barrage of retaliatory strikes that hit Persian Gulf states, as the State Department worked to facilitate charter flights for citizens stranded in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. U.S. embassies across the region have been targeted by Iranian strikes, forcing their closure in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
