Suspected road-rage attack ends with woman, dog killed and man fatally shot

Video posted online of vehicles speeding by a crash Sunday afternoon in Virginia shows two cars, one with a crumpled front end, the other with damage to the back. Both were in a breakdown lane of the Capital Beltway.

Police said whatever happened to cause the crash appears to have enraged one man, who they said stabbed four women and a dog before a Virginia state trooper fatally shot him on the side of the busy highway in Annandale.

One of the women — Michelle Adams, 39, of Fairfax, Virginia — died of her injuries. Three others, ages 36, 37 and 40, were hospitalized in serious condition. Police said the dog also died.

State police identified the assailant as Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean, Virginia. Efforts to reach relatives of Adams and Llamado were not successful on Monday. The sister of one of the surviving women declined to comment. The others could not be reached.

The crash and stabbings occurred about 1:15 p.m. on Sunday on the outer loop of Interstate 495, near Exit 52 at Little River Turnpike, south of U.S. Route 50.

The incident shut the southbound lanes of I-495 for several hours, snarling traffic. The 64-mile-long Beltway — 22 miles of which are in Virginia — encircles the nation’s capital and is one of the busiest and most congested highways. Traffic volume can exceed 240,000 vehicles a day.

A spokesman for the Virginia State Police said in a statement that a trooper responded to a report of a road-rage incident and was confronted by a man “carrying a knife.”

The trooper “shot the suspect in self defense,” the statement said, offering no other details of the confrontation. The trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

State police said they are also investigating the cause of the crash. They did not identify who was in each vehicle or who might have been at fault for the collision.

John Hudson contributed to this report.
