Strikes across the Persian Gulf stretched into a second day Sunday after Iran pledged to avenge the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, who was among the Iranian leaders killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on hundreds of sites. The Iranian government declared 40 days of mourning as the elimination of layers of its leadership left succession in question. The Israel Defense Forces said early Sunday it had launched more strikes, and Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region continued, with sirens sounding in Bahrain and local media reporting explosions in Qatar.
