“Sinners” was the undisputed champion of the 57th NAACP Image Awards, which took place on Saturday in Pasadena and were hosted by Deon Cole. Ryan Coogler’s singular vampire horror drama, which made history in January with 18 nominations, took home three statuettes on Saturday: best film, breakthrough performer for Miles Caton and lead actor for Michael B. Jordan, who also scooped up the night’s top prize, Entertainer of the Year.
When added to the wins the film notched during the non-televised ceremonies that took place earlier this week — including director, screenplay, ensemble cast, supporting actor for Delroy Lindo, supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku and cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw — “Sinners” walked away with a grand total of 13 NAACP Image Awards.
In non-“Sinners” film news, Cynthia Erivo won Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for “Wicked.”
On the TV side, “Reasonable Doubt” won best drama series, Sterling K. Brown took lead drama series actor for “Paradise” and Angela Bassett scooped up drama series actress for “9-1-1.”
Following “Abbott Elementary’s” crowning as best comedy series on Thursday, on Saturday, its creator and star, Quinta Brunson, was named best actress in a comedy series, while Cedric The Entertainer triumphed as best comedy series actor for “The Neighborhood.”
Saturday’s celebration was a joyous affair, welcome counterprogramming following the N-word incident at the BAFTA Awards on Sunday, when John Davidson, a Tourette’s activist and the subject of the film “I Swear,” involuntarily shouted the shouted the N-word while Lindo and his “Sinners” costar Michael B. Jordan were presenting an award. Regina Hall asked the audience to “take a moment for the two kings in the audience” and gestured toward Jordan and Lindo, while the audience gave them a standing ovation. Later, when Lindo and Coogler were presenting best actress in a film, Lindo thanked the audience for the “support and the love we’ve been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend.” The crowd rose to their feet and applauded again.
During his opening monologue, host Deon Cole joked, “If there are any white men out there with Tourette’s, I advise you to tell them to read the room tonight.”
The 57th NAACP Image Awards kicked off on Monday with part 1 of a three-day virtual show, with Michelle Obama and Kendrick Lamar among the first round of winners. Tuesday’s Part 2 was highlighted by more wins for Lamar and Obama, plus SZA, Cardi B and Don Lemon, while Glynn Turman, Teyana Taylor and Durald Arkapaw were among the victors of Night 3. Additional categories were announced at the Creative Honors on Thursday.
