After Producers Guild Awards, Can ‘One Battle After Another’ Be Beaten?

The Producers Guild of America awarded its top prize to “One Battle After Another” on Saturday night, extending an awards-season hot streak for the film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

In his acceptance speech, Anderson said he would share the award with the Warner Bros. film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who greenlit his movie as well as fellow PGA nominees “Sinners” and “Weapons.”

Then, obliquely referring to Paramount’s deal to acquire Warner Bros. — a move that has rattled Hollywood — Anderson told the studio chiefs, “Long may you wave. Whatever the future holds, it is one battle after another.”

This award is considered the strongest bellwether for the best-picture Oscar, largely because many members belong to both the guild and the academy. In the 17 years since the two groups adopted a preferential ballot and expanded their best-film categories beyond five nominees, the PGA winner has gone on to win the best-picture Oscar all but three times.

“One Battle After Another” has amassed quite the war chest this season, taking top prizes from the Directors Guild, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and BAFTA. If there remains any film that can still challenge it for the best-picture Oscar at the March 15 ceremony, that is probably the vampire drama “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler.

After setting a record last month for the most Oscar nominations ever, “Sinners” could earn more momentum at the Actor Awards that will be held by the Screen Actors Guild on Sunday night. Winning that guild’s ensemble prize would put “Sinners” in the company of past SAG winners “Moonlight” and “Parasite,” both of which went on to topple the PGA winner at the Oscars.

Held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, the PGA ceremony also honored Mariska Hargitay’s documentary, “My Mom Jayne,” and the animated film “KPop Demon Hunters.” The top TV awards went to “The Pitt” (best episodic drama), “The Studio” (best episodic comedy) and “Adolescence” (best limited series).
