The United States and Israel launched a major attack on Iran on Saturday, striking Tehran, the capital, and other large cities in an assault that threatened a broader regional conflict. U.S. and Israeli officials have said that the initial wave of strikes targeted Iranian leadership, military assets and nuclear facilities.
President Trump had threatened for weeks to strike Iran unless its leadership agreed to U.S. demands, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program. Last year, the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities.
The latest attacks prompted retaliatory strikes from Iran that targeted Israel and U.S. interests throughout the region, including U.S. facilities in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Officials in Jordan and Saudi Arabia said that they had intercepted Iranian attacks.
Strikes in Iran
Satellite imagery taken on Saturday morning shows extensive damage at the high-security compound of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, in Tehran. Mr. Khamenei’s exact location is unclear.
Videos verified by The New York Times show strikes in an area of Tehran that houses the presidential palace and Iran’s National Security Council. Another video shows a strike near the Ministry of Intelligence.
The Times also verified videos showing a strike hitting Square 72, a residential area in the Narmak neighborhood in northeastern Tehran where Iran’s former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is known to reside.
Retaliatory strikes
Retaliatory missiles were reported to have struck Israel, but there were few reports of injuries resulting from the initial barrage.
A witness video verified by The Times shows a strike on a U.S. Navy base in Bahrain on Saturday morning. Bahraini authorities confirmed that the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters there was hit in a missile attack.
Additional videos appeared to show an object landing close to one of the buildings along the Palm Jumeirah road on an artificial island off the coast of Dubai, causing an explosion. Four people were injured and taken to a hospital, according to the authorities in Dubai.
