A Democrat representative says articles of impeachment will be filed against Donald Trump “before Christmas.”
Al Green has confirmed at a speech in Washington D.C. yesterday that motions for the impeachment of the president would be filed this year, according to Newsweek. Rep. Green said, “There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break, this I will pledge to you.”
Trump faced two separate impeachments during his first term. The first impeachment was for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. This was voted through on a 230 to 197 vote in the House of Representatives. The U.S. Senate went on to vote 48 “guilty” and 52 “not guilty”.
Trump had been accused of breaking the law by pressuring Ukraine’s leader, Volodymr Zelenskyy, to dig up information on a political rival during the 2020 election. Trump was impeached in December but was ultimately cleared.
A second impeachment for incitement of insurrection passed through the U.S. Senate on a 57 to 43 vote, though it fell 10 short of a conviction. Trump is the first president in history to be impeached twice.
Ultimately, 10 rebel Republicans would vote with the Democrats, enough to pass the impeachment but not enough to convict.
It is not clear what the impeachment charge would be in Green’s filing. It is also unclear whether the impeachment would pass as the Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives.
Should Trump face a third impeachment, the House must vote on an article of impeachment, and if a majority is reached, the trial begins in the Senate.
Political commentators believe Trump, should he be confirmed as one of Jeffrey Epstein’s clients, could face a third impeachment. Writing for Raw Story, Robert Reich suggested the Epstein issue could come to define Trump’s second term.
He wrote, “The stakes for Trump are huge. If he was in fact one of Epstein’s clients, it could lead to his impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate, because Trump’s MAGA base — to which congressional Republicans are solicitous — would probably turn against him. They can tolerate all sorts of wrongdoing by him but not pedophilia.”
