One of the most potent themes to the style on and off the runways at London Fashion Week, which ended on Monday, was volume. Many ensembles had shapes that commanded space and, as a result, attention.
Broad, padded and poufy shoulders distinguished all sorts of clothing. Double-breasted attire was abundant in various forms: jackets, dresses and, on the runway at Burberry, a sleeveless, high-collar top. Other skirts and dresses were worn with petticoats, giving them fuller proportions that evoked the exaggerated silhouettes seen on several runways, including Erdem, Simone Rocha and Edeline Lee. Thevxlley, which held its first fashion-week show this season, was another label that went big: Its collection included tops that resembled giant vases, out of which popped models’ heads.
