A former GOP strategist believes the end for Donald Trump’s administration is in sight as the president has turned his strengths into liabilities.
Rick Wilson, a former Republican Party member and advisor, believes the president has eroded his power base from within and will struggle to see out the remainder of his term in office. Writing in his Substack ahead of the State of Union address Tuesday, Wilson suggested Trump would see a power shift in the coming months.
He wrote, “His strongest issues are now liabilities. That’s not a messaging problem. That’s structural erosion. When American trade policy lurches unpredictably, markets recoil and our competitors adjust.
“China signs long-term deals while Washington cycles through tariff theatrics. Russia exploits distraction and division to keep killing Ukrainian children and seniors in civilian attacks. When the United States embraces authoritarian whimsy, the world looks for newer, smarter leaders, and sane, stable alliances.”
Beyond the erosion of America’s world standing, the ongoing release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files is also a major cause for concern among Trump’s supporters, potentially eroding the MAGA support for Trump, Wilson wrote.
“Each document release, each new revelation, each Pam Bondi screeching session, each awkward non-answer reinforces a simple perception: powerful people orbiting powerful criminals rarely face full accountability,” Wilson wrote.
“The MAGA base is broken over this. Shattered. Everyone else is ready to roll with pitchforks, tumbrels, and guillotines. Legitimacy erodes not in explosions, but in the slow-motion abuses of political, governmental, and legal power.”
The collection of worries the Trump admin is now facing could see the tide shift against the president and his team, who are losing influence in circles they were once dominant in, Wilson wrote.
“So you’ll see a pyramid of lies, mendacity, and Munchausenesque economic claims,” he wrote. “You will see applause lines engineered for Fox chyrons. You will see ludicrous claims of economic renaissance, the GOP knows are untrue, but will stand and clap for with wild abandon, their smiles hiding the fear of voters who know it’s all a lie.
“You will see imaginary villains named and caricatured. Somali day cares! Pet-hungry Haitians! Mexican gangs! Antifa! Trans athletes! You will hear language calibrated for TikTok virality and right-wing podcast echo chambers. He knows he needs to glue that part of his coalition back together because even the influencers are looking past him now.”
