“When I dress like this, people tend to take me more seriously,” said Ara Idun, a 24-year-old graduate student at Georgetown University, who was bundled up in black layers that included a long faux-shearling coat, a furry hat and a ribbed sweater.
She and some friends were out in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan on a Thursday in January, taking photos of themselves, using the cityscape as a backdrop.
Her ensemble was somewhat paradoxical: She was dressed thoughtfully and stylishly, but in muted attire that, along with her sunglasses, suggested a desire to be incognito. Talking about her style, she described herself as the type of person who liked to “remain anonymous.”
It hasn’t stopped her from standing out. “I do find myself getting attention,” she said. “People tend to compliment me and walk away quickly.”
As we chatted, a passerby did exactly that.
