Late Night Sums Up Trump’s Tariff Tiff with the Supreme Court

Welcome to Late Night Roundup, a rundown of the previous night’s highlights that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. Here are the 50 best movies on Netflix right now.

Contempt of Court

The Supreme Court struck down President Trump’s sweeping tariffs in a 6-to-3 ruling on Friday.

Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show” commended the conservative-leaning court’s decision on the tariffs, saying “somebody finally had the balls to say were illegal.”

“Wow, a court composed mostly of his own party’s appointees has struck down the constitutionality of Trump’s go-it-alone tariff regime,” Stewart said. “That’s bound to cause him some introspection.”

“After the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump said he would take the case to the ‘Supremer Court.’ [imitating Trump] ‘I’m talking to all the Supremes — Diana Ross. Diana Ross. Get Diana Ross on the phone. Get me Marty Supreme.’” — JIMMY FALLON

“The U.S. may have to pay back $140 billion. Trump was like, ‘I’m going to be honest. It’s all tied up in ballrooms right now, so I don’t know.’” — JIMMY FALLON

“This was Donald Trump’s most humiliating legal defeat, even more than the one with the porn star, where he farted through the whole trial.” — JIMMY KIMMEL

“Trump was angry. He lashed out at his own handpicked justices. He called them fools and lap dogs, and said they were an embarrassment to their families. And as father to Eric and Don Jr, that is man who knows an embarrassment to his whole family.” — JIMMY KIMMEL

“And now, the whole thing is a mess because these companies want refunds for the tariffs they paid, but no one knows how to go about getting one. And of course, Donald Trump doesn’t give refunds. If he gives a refund, it’s like when Rumpelstiltskin says his own name. He shrivels up and he disappears.” — JIMMY KIMMEL

“We had him! He always gets away, like the Road Runner.” — JON STEWART, on Trump’s doubling down on tariffs after the court’s decision, announcing a new 15 percent tariff

“He thought he owned the Supreme Court. And to be honest, I thought he owned the Supreme Court. Turns out he doesn’t totally own the Supreme Court. That’s good news.” — MICHAEL IAN BLACK on “Have I Got News For You”

The Punchiest Punchlines (‘Crash’ Patel Edition)

“There is nothing that can take away from the joyous moment as all Americans celebrate this incredible — wait, what the [expletive]? Is that F.B.I. director Kash Patel? Why is our F.B.I. director — and why are they putting a medal around the neck of F.B.I. director Kash? Is Kash Patel a Make-a-Wish … man? Kid? Is that what this is?” — JON STEWART on U.S. men’s hockey team winning gold

“That’s always who you want to party with first when you win a championship, the director of the F.B.I. I remember when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and the first person that got a Champagne shower was Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.” — SETH MEYERS

“Why he was there — why he needed to be in Italy at all, nobody knows. All we know is that we paid for it.” — JIMMY KIMMEL

“Patel defended his little field trip weakly. He says he was at the Olympics to ‘protect U.S. athletes.’ Yes, by tasting their beer to make sure it isn’t poisoned.” — JIMMY KIMMEL
