Fashion icon Anna Wintour gave a withering critique of first lady Melania Trump’s wardrobe during a new interview on Wednesday.
Wintour joined filmmaker Greta Gerwig, actress Meryl Streep, and reporters from Vogue Magazine for a wide-ranging interview about fashion, politics, and the upcoming “Devil Wears Prada” sequel. At one point, Gerwig asked Wintour about how women can communicate power through fashion. The Daily Mail noted that Wintour’s response seemed to shade one of Trump’s favorite fashion choices.
“I don’t think wearing a power suit to the office is in any way necessary,” Wintour said. Trump routinely wears a pant suit at the White House, The Daily Mail reported.
Streep also threw cold water on another one of Trump’s more memorable looks, the jacket that said: “I Don’t Care, Do U?”
“I have so many thoughts about this,” the legendary actress said. “I think the most powerful message that our current First Lady sent was in the coat that said, ‘I Really Don’t Care. Do U?’ when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated.”
“All dress is about expressing yourself, but we’re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation,” she added.
