House Speaker Mike Johnson faces “healthy amount of anger,” from Republicans after what Punchbowl News described a “cardinal sin” — Johnson abandoned a position he forced his members to support.
Johnson initially rejected a Senate GOP-Democratic compromise to fund DHS after 52 days of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, directing House Republicans to oppose it. However, Johnson then released a statement appearing to endorse the same Senate plan, leaving House Republicans exposed.
Punchbowl News reported Johnson used his conference “to stick their necks out for a negotiating position that he immediately abandoned.”
Even GOP leadership allies called it a “bait-and-switch tactic,” with the Main Street Caucus expressing frustration.
During a nearly three-hour conference call, House Republicans complained about leadership strategy and Senate “weakness.” The Washington Post suggested Johnson’s initial rejection aimed to save his job by avoiding Freedom Caucus backlash to any Democratic-endorsed proposal.
