‘Stop This Madness’: Time to Rein In Trump’s Reckless Conduct

To the Editor:

Re “Trump Sharpens Threat, and Profanity, in Focus on Civilian Targets” (news article, April 6):

Since the United States and Israel launched their war on Iran on Feb. 28, the Trump administration has provided a range of justifications, none of them persuasive. This was a war of choice, without a plan, strategy or endgame. The war has now entered its sixth week. Neither the United States nor Israel has shown concern for the lives, the safety or the future of the Iranian civilian population that they claim to be rescuing.

President Trump’s rhetoric has become even more unhinged. He has declared that he will bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages, where they belong” if its government does not surrender. In his expletive-filled social media post on Easter Sunday, he included more threats of war crimes. It is as if Mr. Trump wants to take revenge on the Iranian people because their government has not bowed to his demands.

It is now time to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office. He is clearly unfit and poses a danger both to this country and to the world.

This is an extraordinary measure. But these are extraordinary times.

To the Editor:

Republicans: No mincing words. This is all on you, right now. Will you stand by and watch, allowing this president — assuming he is indeed in control at all — to commit war crimes under the flag of the United States of America? Will you allow this leader of our nation — the “land of the free and the home of the brave” that put it all on the line to help liberate Europe from fascism — join the ranks of the worst foreign dictators in modern history?

There is no time for nuance and debate. We can continue those discussions later. You must join with your fellow members of Congress who are ready to stop this madness immediately.

Your moment of integrity is now.

To the Editors:

The man is deranged. The world is teetering. When are his enablers and the majority party in Congress going to wake up?

Two Moon Missions, 58 Years Apart

To the Editor:

Re “Moon Launch for the Ages, for a Minute,” by Peter Baker (Washington Memo, front page, April 5):

I appreciate Mr. Baker’s parallels between the 1968 Apollo 8 and 2026 Artemis II moon orbit expeditions.

As a 10-year-old boy, I was one of the many who watched the former with family members during Christmas week on one of the three major television networks. Fifty-eight years later, I viewed the latter with my family during Easter/Passover week on NASA’s YouTube channel.

While I observe babies in my family discovering their world, it is no surprise that the adults never lost their childhood curiosity and desires for exploration, which helps explain the captivation of space travel.

As in 1968, there are deep divisions in America. With the level of human intelligence contributing to space missions, it is tragic that we still cannot apply our brainpower to navigate alternatives to fighting wars.

Jeffrey B. Freedman New York

To the Editor:

Billions of dollars for the latest NASA testosterone-fest? Wowza. There are a lot of folks living on the streets who would love to live in a home a fraction of the size of a space capsule. But we won’t spend billions of dollars to help them. Houston, we have a problem.
