MAGA Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas was mocked on Easter Sunday after he shared a social media post celebrating an obviously AI-generated image.
Abbott shared a post from an account called “Missy In So Cal” on X that purported to show an Air Force colonel who was rescued after his plane was shot down in Iran. The image shows a white soldier holding the American flag, surrounded by other soldiers, in a rescue aircraft.
Abbott shared the post under the caption “This is so awesome.”
X users attached an “added context” blurb to the photo, identifying the image as AI-generated.
“This photo is AI-generated,” the post reads. “The Pentagon has not released any official images of the rescue mission or the colonel for operational security. Similar images of smiling soldiers with flags in helicopters have been identified as synthetic fakes.”
Political observers and analysts mocked Abbott on social media.
“Been embarrassing himself on social media like this since the Jade Helm era,” public affairs strategist Jennifer Harris posted on Bluesky.
“You’re the governor of Texas and fell for a blatantly fake AI photo. What is wrong with you?” Democratic congressional candidate Fred Wellman posted on X.
“There are a lot of stupid politicians, but Greg Abbott might be the most credulous on social media,” journalist Matt Novak posted on Bluesky.
“Fell for it again award. Boomers always get got by AI, and it’s beautiful,” retired Air Force bioenvironmental engineer Mike Gilbert posted on X.
