Want to pay for other people’s car repairs? In California, you will

Want to pay for other people’s car repairs? In California, you will

How very California.

Here on the left edge of America, governors, legislators and bureaucrats love to impose their partisan Utopia on the rest of us –– at our own expense, of course.

This time it’s taxpayer subsidies for personal EV repairs.

How ludicrous.

Under a state program rolled out March 30, some EV owners can have taxpayers cover up to $7,500 in EV battery or fuel-cell repair costs.

Or if the battery’s beyond repair, taxpayers will hand over $10K toward the purchase of a new, personal EV.

What a racket.

If state officials find you deserving (i.e., you’re a low-income EV owner), congratulations.

If they don’t … prepare to pay up.

The program –– run by the California Air Resources Board and dubbed the Zero-Emission Assurance Project –– is the product of AB 193, passed by the Legislature and signed by former Gov. Jerry Brown in 2018.

And it’s (yet) another example of the disconnect between the state’s ruling class and reality.

First: California motorists don’t want to be told what to drive –– or made to pay the bills of those who made “enlightened,” state-approved choices.

Second: We should all be able to agree that motorists (yes, even those with low incomes) should cover their own car-repair bills.

It’s basic personal responsibility. It’s also wrong to saddle taxpayers with other people’s personal costs.

And third: A state running a budget with billions in annual red ink should end the frivolous spending.

Can anyone claim, with sincerity, that subsidizing personal car repairs is  among the Top 100 –– or even 500 –– priorities for state spending?

This program is a classic case of California’s partisan, Utopian, virtue-signaling lunacy.

As per the usual arrangement:

The governor, legislators, and regulators have their heads in the clouds and their hands in our pockets.

Enough already.
