Democrats are seizing on a new opening against President Donald Trump described as a “political gift,” just months before the midterm elections.
The moment was highlighted during a CNN segment on Friday, where New York Times congressional correspondent Annie Karni said Democrats were “agog” at what amounted to a “political gift” handed to them by Trump.
“I’m hearing Democrats can’t believe what they’re hearing from this White House,” Karni said on-air, referencing Trump’s record budget request for defense spending, while also “saying out loud, we can’t pay for daycare, we can’t pay for health care, the states should do that.”
She then pointed to the reaction among Democratic lawmakers, saying they see the situation as an opening to frame their political message ahead of the upcoming election
“They are sort of agog at how much of a gift this is politically,” the Times reporter said. “This is a war no one asked for. The president’s supporters, who were like America First, didn’t want involvement in foreign wars.”
Karni added that Democrats “could not believe” Trump was “saying the quiet part out loud and giving them a political gift for the midterms. “
“So they are thinking that this is a political gift, even though it’s harming the country and gas prices are going up,” she concluded.
