Stylists share 8 items you should get rid of from your spring wardrobe

  • Business Insider asked professional stylists which items should be removed from closets this season.
  • Two of the stylists agreed that all-white sneakers are out — and being replaced by colorful options.
  • Overly embellished handbags, jean shorts, cotton scarves, and capris have also fallen out of favor.

Spring is a natural time to press the reset button on your wardrobe, especially as many embrace seasonal cleaning.

To help you refresh your personal style as you pack away those heavier layers, Business Insider asked three stylists which items they’d retire for spring — and what to wear instead.

Here’s what they said.

Overly embellished handbags are being swapped for more delicate designs.

David Zyla, Emmy-award-winning stylist and author of “Color Your Style,” said heavily decorated handbags are on their way out this season.

Bags with excessive detailing, like chains, studs, buckles, and exposed zippers, can feel dated and add unnecessary visual weight. Instead, Zyla recommends swapping them out for more delicate styles.

“We’re seeing a replacement of bags that are visually lighter, including retro-inspired top-handle bags, drawstring pouches, and vanity-case styles,” the stylist told BI.

Put away your hoodies and zip-up sweaters.

According to Kendra Sharpe, stylist and founder of Kendra Sharpe Styling and Creative, casual hoodies and zip-up sweaters are on their way out.

Instead, she recommends a more refined option: a quarter-zip sweater, with a zipper that starts at the chest rather than running the full length.

“You can choose a solid color to keep it more neutral, and it looks more polished than a hoodie without feeling overdone,” Sharpe said.

Plain white sneakers have been overdone.

Both Zyla and Sharpe said the once-ubiquitous all-white sneaker has run its course. Instead, they recommend choosing shoes with more visual interest.

For a simple sneaker update, Sharpe suggests reaching for a more colorful pair.

“They give you a pop of color and instantly make your outfit feel more stylish,” the stylist told BI. “It’s an easy way to add interest without overdoing it.”

Say goodbye to denim shorts.

According to Letam “Ley” Duson, founder of Ley All Day Personal Styling, jean shorts (AKA jorts) are falling out of favor this season.

Instead, they’ll be replaced by longer Bermuda shorts, which offer a more refined look.

“They’re still versatile, but they give you a chicer look than jorts,” the stylist said.

Consider replacing your jean jacket with a structured blazer.

Although Sharpe said the classic denim jacket isn’t going anywhere, it may be worth setting aside and replacing it with something more elevated.

Instead, she recommends a structured blazer, which creates a defined shape and can instantly pull a look together.

“They give you a nice shape and can be dressed up or down, so you have a lot of possibilities,” Sharpe told BI.

Cotton scarves are being swapped for silk options.

Duson said it’s time to ditch cotton scarves in favor of silk versions, which can instantly elevate an outfit with added color and interest.

The accessory, often associated with European fashion, can also be styled in multiple ways.

“You can tie it in a simple knot, or tuck it into a top,” Duson told BI.

It may be time to ditch your tired, basic flats.

This season, Sharpe recommends getting rid of your basic flats or slides. Instead, she suggests opting for a more fashion-forward alternative, like a ruched loafer or boat shoe.

According to the stylist, the key to pulling off this look is keeping it effortless, rather than overly polished.

“The more worn, the better, especially with boat shoes, since that lived-in look is part of the style,” Sharpe said.

Capris are out, and balloon pants are in.

According to Zyla, the cropped-pant capri style has run its course. Instead, it’s being replaced with balloon pants, which feel more current. This silhouette is roomier but is still tailored at the waist and ankle.

The stylist added that balloon pants in fabrics like denim, poplin, or satin, transition easily from day to night. They also pair well with a cropped blouse or jacket to highlight the waist.
