Though the fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris tend to get the most attention, others that happen around the world can offer as much — if not more — style inspiration. Case in point: Tokyo Fashion Week, which took place this month, just after the shows in Paris.
On runways and off, the clothing on display showcased certain hallmarks of Japanese fashion, like relaxed silhouettes and innovative constructions. Extreme layering — or “layermaxxing,” in today’s parlance — was ubiquitous. Often it involved combining wool, lace, denim and more textiles, resulting in ensembles laden with texture. Other outfits made noise by mashing up patterns, prints and colors. Did some clash? Yes. But that seemed to be the point.
