The “Love Story” finale depicted John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s fatal 1999 plane crash.
In the emotional episode Thursday night, the duo — portrayed by Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon — headed to Martha’s Vineyard with the fashion publicist’s sister, Lauren Bessette, played by Sydney Lemmon.
Kennedy Jr., who was helming the plane, could be seen beginning to panic behind the wheel.
Carolyn, in the final moments of the scene, attempted to calm her husband, repeating, “It’s OK. Just breathe.”
The aircraft’s subsequent crash into the Atlantic Ocean, which resulted in the deaths of all three passengers, was not explicitly shown.
The trio died halfway into the episode, with the rest of the finale documenting their family members’ grief.
The series closed with Carolyn and Lauren’s mom, Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, reading a eulogy as the late Calvin Klein executive was shown cuddling on a beach with her partner.
Social media users shared their heartbreak via X.
“I got so attached to the characters for the past few weeks that I forgot it’s based on a true story and how it ends,” one fan wrote. “Now I’m a sobbing mess.”
Another simply tweeted, “Damn, this hurts.”
“Love Story,” produced by Ryan Murphy, premiered in February and documented Kennedy Jr. and Bessette’s relationship, from meeting in 1992 to tying the knot four years later.
Despite fans raving over the series, real-life Kennedys — and the pilot’s ex Daryl Hannah — have denounced it.
Jack Shlossberg blasted the project as a “grotesque display of someone else’s life” in early March, eight months after he slammed Murphy, 60, for profiting off of making the tragedy a “public spectacle.”
As for Hannah, who was portrayed by Dree Hemingway, she recently eviscerated the “tragedy-exploiting … distortion” in a bombshell essay.
Pidgeon came to the show’s defense last month, explaining to People that the backlash simply reminded her of “the weight of this responsibility and wanting to do these people justice.”
The actress, 29, acknowledged that “people are protective of the [late couple’s] story.”
