One person was killed in a fire on the top floor of a Bronx apartment building on Thursday morning, the New York Fire Department said.
Firefighters received a call at 5:30 a.m. and responded to a report of a fire at East 184th Street in the Belmont neighborhood, according to Kevin F. Woods, the department’s chief of fire operations. There was “heavy fire” on the top floor and through the roof, Chief Woods said. “It’s very difficult to access that fire,” he added.
Chief Woods said a body was found in the apartment where the fire originated. No further information on the person’s identity was immediately available.
Four firefighters sustained minor injuries, including heat exhaustion and minor sprains, Chief Woods said. Those injuries were non-life threatening. There were no other injuries to anyone in the building.
The fire, which eventually grew to five alarms, was under control by later Thursday morning.
The roof of the building collapsed into the top floor, Chief Woods said. The building cornice also collapsed.
The cause was under investigation.
