Heather Graham defended her decision to follow a “non-traditional path” and remain child-free at 56.
“I think that the culture is more accepting of it now. I think in the past, it was this idea of like, ‘Why aren’t you doing that?’ But, I think less people are doing it 1774557904 than they were,” the “Boogie Nights” actress shared on Thursday’s episode of “The Bossticks.”
“I think it’s great to do it if you have this love in your heart and you want to give it to kids. But, I don’t think everyone should feel obligated.”
“Obviously there’s a lot of people that are terrible parents,” added the “Austin Powers” actress, who has been estranged from her own parents for much of her adult life.
“Better not to do it if you don’t think you could,” she added.
“I had a therapist that said, ‘If you don’t have kids, then life will bring you other people to nurture.’ So, there’s other things that come into your life that you can nurture.”
Graham — who was recently spotted on a Mexican getaway with Italian filmmaker Michele Civetta — continued on, adding that the idea of women needing to start families is “kind of sexist.”
“I don’t think people are going, ‘Well, you’re a guy. Why don’t you have kids? Like, what’s wrong with you?’ It’s not the same judgement as on a woman,” she said, adding that she thinks it’s “cool” that more women are opting out of the traditional family-planning.
Graham made similar comments last April as she admitted that she’s mostly “glad” she never had children of her own in an interview with the Guardian.
“I think I’ve had moments where I wondered: what would it have been like if I had a kid? I guess I would say 80% of the time I feel glad I don’t have kids, and I feel free and really good about it, and maybe 20% of the time I wonder what would it be like. You just have to appreciate the life you have,” Graham told the outlet.
“I do think it’s awesome now that more women are expressing their desire to not have kids,” she continued.
“The culture says: ‘You need to have kids.’ But why? If you’re not being a people pleaser, what do you really want?”
