Liberal media went wall-to-wall in outrage last week after an immigration judge denied the asylum claims of Adrian Conejo Arias and his family, ordering them deported back to Ecuador — even 5-year-old Liam Ramos, the tot with the blue bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack who launched a million lefty memes and even a Bad Bunny tribute at the Super Bowl.
The Minneapolis case supposedly encapsulates the cruelty of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, but it actually showcases the harsh madness of President Joe Biden’s open-borders approach.
Under Biden, simply saying “I want asylum” was a get-into-the-country-free password — but that didn’t eradicate the rest of US immigration law and enforcement.
Actual asylum is still reserved for cases where you can show you’re targeted for violence back home, or at least part of some targeted group.
So the Conejo Arias-Ramos family faced long odds against winning a lasting right to stay: Ecuador is a relatively stable country; only 12% of its migrants’ asylum cases actually succeed.
Telling them they’d be able to stay forever was a cruel lie.
Democrats waved 8 million to 10 million people into the interior under Biden, with the radical open-borders crowd hoping it could then leverage temporary permission to say into something more.
They didn’t care what false hope they were offering these migrants, who in fact became cogs in the cynical progressive “change” machine.
But now the immigration system is working as it should: The family had its day in court, and the court said they don’t qualify for asylum; advocate-paid lawyers will try one final appeal, but that’s vanishingly unlikely to buy Liam and his folks more than another month or three.
Those lawyers also say Liam suffers “mental anguish” from his ordeal; that damage is on the progressives who chose to exploit this whole vast migrant wave as fodder for their own cause.
