Female traveler reveals surprising hack for the most ‘freeing’ solo trip: ‘Can we talk about ugly privilege?’

Turns out “pretty privilege” has its drawbacks.

Women on social media are sharing a surprising upside to downplaying their looks while traveling solo.

The viral theory, dubbed “ugly privilege,” exploded after a post last week on Reddit’s r/solofemaletravellers forum racked up more than 15,000 upvotes, with one globetrotter claiming going makeup-free and low-effort made her feel “invisible” — in the best way possible.

“I very much go unnoticed,” user Free_Wonder_3743 wrote, describing months on the road in comfy clothes, messy hair and zero glam. “And omg is it amazing when you’re a solo female traveller!”

According to the loner globetrotter, averting the “male gaze” meant fewer stares, less harassment and a whole lot more peace of mind — a stark contrast to experiences when she dressed up.

“That’s not to say I think of myself as ugly,” the original poster added, “but I haven’t been attracting the male gaze while I’m in my traveller aesthetic and it’s felt FREEING.”

“Anyone else relate?”

Female travelers and aging women in general flooded the thread with more than 1,500 comments, agreeing that, while society often glorifies attractiveness, being perceived as less conventionally “put together” can come with unexpected perks, especially when navigating unfamiliar places alone.

“One of the most amazing things about aging is getting hassled less,” wrote Reddit user JabbaTheHedgeHog in a top-voted comment.

“Yup, there’s definitely an advantage to being ugly,” said user Syntania, a self-proclaimed awkward introvert. “The absolute peace of being left alone is glorious.”

Others pointed out the darker subtext — that the phenomenon says more about how women are treated than how they look.

“It is not a privilege to not be harassed when out in public,” declared user 4travelers. “Harassment is an attack and people who do it should be held accountable.”

Ehoed user Maleficent-Poetry254, “The problem is it’s rarely nice or attractive men doing this. It’s often men who are scary and you don’t want them preying on you.”

“I’m old now and dont have to worry about it anymore. It’s freaking great.”

Still, many said the trade-off can feel worth it in certain situations — particularly for safety and sanity while traveling.

“I’m invisible, and it’s bliss.”
