President Donald Trump’s administration sparked outrage on Thursday after it unveiled a “creepy” and “illegal” design for a 24K gold coin to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.
The Commission of Fine Arts approved a coin design featuring Trump hunched over, his fists on a desk. It also features a slender-looking characterization of Trump and 13 stars to represent the 13 original colonies. The commission’s vice chair, James McCrery, said the coin should be “as large as possible,” CNN reported.
“I motion to approve this as presented, and with the strong encouragement that you make it as large as possible, all the way to three inches in diameter,” McCrery said.
The design attracted outrage when it was shared on social media.
“Straight-up banana republic stuff,” a political commentary account, Republicans Against Trump, posted on X.
“This is creepy. A bunch of pervs,” former Republican lawmaker Adam Kinzinger posted on x.
“This. Is. Literally. Illegal,” Marine veteran Jay Mallow posted on X.
“No remote historical basis for this cultish usurpation and personalization of a national celebration unrelated to Voldemort. Absurd,” author Dr. Oswald Sobrino posted on X.
