Republican senators are prepared to approve Senator Markwayne Mullin as Homeland Security Secretary despite privately acknowledging Senator Rand Paul’s “vicious” attack on him during his confirmation hearing was not unfounded.
Paul, the Homeland Security Committee chair, highlighted Mullin’s past comments calling him a “freaking snake” and his acknowledgment of understanding why Paul’s neighbor attacked him in 2017, breaking Paul’s ribs.
A senior Republican told Raw Story the criticism “was pretty vicious, but Rand kept his cool.” Most GOP senators avoided public commentary on the heated exchange.
Senator Ron Johnson dismissed it as typical confirmation process theater, while Senator Ted Cruz simply stated “they don’t like each other.” Other senators, including Roger Marshall and Josh Hawley, declined to engage with the personal animosity.
Many Republicans framed Mullin’s defiant demeanor during the hearing as evidence of his suitability for the DHS role, with senators characterizing it as showing his “human side” and relationships across party lines.
