‘Hollow canard’: Firestorm as Mike Johnson fails to name even one instance of voter fraud

House Speaker Mike Johnson was caught completely flat-footed Tuesday when a reporter pressed him on the one thing his party’s signature voting bill is supposedly designed to prevent: actual voter fraud.

Johnson (R-LA) shrugged off a reporter’s question to provide examples of voter fraud in any previous election in any state that Trump’s SAVE Act would have stopped.

“The president has said that the SAVE America Act is his number one priority,” the reporter began. “When making the argument to Democrats .. can you give me one example of fraud conducted in a previous election that the SAVE America Act would have prevented?”

Johnson either couldn’t or wouldn’t.

“Look, we’re not going to litigate all that. I can tell you what I’ll tell Democrats. You should listen to the American people. Ostensibly, we’re supposed to come here and represent the interests of the American people. This is a 90–10 issue in public opinion polling, and Democrats agree that you should be a citizen and have a photo ID to vote at a tune of about 70 percent,” Johnson replied.

Over the past two decades, voter fraud has been found in a tiny fraction of cases, below 1 percent.

The bill mandates that all currently registered voters reregister in person at a voter registration office. In 45 states, a standard REAL ID wouldn’t even suffice. Voters would instead need to produce a passport, passport card, or certified birth certificate.

The legislation would create a costly financial burden, The New Republic noted, as only about half of Americans have a passport, and a new one costs $165 plus additional application fees. A passport card costs $65, with more costs piling up for photos and required documents. Furthermore, anyone who changed their name after birth, including married women, would have to produce proof of that name change, like a wedding license.

The response didn’t sit well with critics.

Melanie D’Arrigo, executive director at Campaign for New York Health, wrote on X, “There are more Trump allies in the Epstein files than there are undocumented immigrants who voted over the last 25 years. They can’t provide an example, because the SAVE Act is’t a voter fraud bill, its a voter suppression and Epstein distraction bill.”

Progressive analyst Alex Cole wrote on X, “It’s because they don’t have any examples.”

Max Flugrath, communications director for Fair Fight, wrote on X, “The most basic scrutiny disproves their lies.”

Reed Galen of pro-democracy organization The Union simply chided, “Actually their job.”

Moe Davis, retired U.S. Air Force colonel, wrote on X, “Everyone with a lick of sense knows that election fraud is a hollow canard to facilitate the Republican plan to suppress voting by those who are most likely to oppose them. The SAVE Act is designed to save them from democracy by imposing a poll tax (all of the documents required to register and to vote cost money) that will disproportionately disenfranchise the young, the old, minorities, and the poor.”
