In these tumultuous times, I find myself looking for release any time I can find it. Not escape necessarily, not someplace to hide, just release: a place to go that is not separate from the scary real world but, if just for a few moments, outside of it. A place where I can find joy, or excitement, or diversion, or even wisdom and enlightenment. A place to laugh or cheer or cry, or some combination of the three.
That’s what the Fanfare newsletter is about. It is, on one hand, about entertainment, about diversion, and yes, a little about escape. But it will also be about how those things connect to our often scary real world, and how they reflect each other. It will sometimes be about movies, sometimes about sports, sometimes about television, sometimes about music, sometimes about books, sometimes about whatever is lighting up me (or you) at a particular moment. It will also be about the context of these times: What it’s like to live through them, to survive them, to make sense of them.
I’ll always try to capture this time in a rational, sane and human fashion, and to do so with what I hope will be a spirit of joy. Because even in tumultuous times, it is a joy to experience so much of what all this world has to offer.
Fanfare with Will Leitch (FWWL, an acronym that is in no way catchy and they will surely never allow me to use again) comes out every Thursday. But the only way this will truly be fun is if you are a part of it with me. So, sign up here. It’s a crazy time to be alive. Let’s get through it together.
