Lily Allen Is on Tour. She Brought Along Some Receipts.

Lily Allen has taken her album “West End Girl” on the road.

Her tour, “Lily Allen: Performs West End Girl,” began on March 2 in Glasgow, and is scheduled to start in the United States on April 3. But it has already generated a wave of speculation largely because of one striking moment in the show.

While performing the song “4chan Stan,” which details a woman’s discovery of her husband’s infidelity via receipts she finds in a bedside drawer, Ms. Allen pulls a long stretch of green fabric around her body. The cloth is printed with receipts from places like the Plaza Hotel in New York, Nobu and Chanel, along with fragments of text messages and handwritten notes.

When Ms. Allen released “West End Girl” last October, the album quickly became a magnet for online theories, think pieces and close readings of the lyrics. The record, which chronicles the slow and painful dissolution of a marriage, is believed to be auto-fictional and inspired by Ms. Allen’s marriage to the “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour. (The pair are currently separated.)

The album’s 14 tracks recount a woman’s experiences of being blindsided by a partner and grappling with sleepless nights, along with her worries about slipping back into addiction and navigating the emotional complications of an open relationship. The songs are unusually detailed, naming places and describing specific discoveries. But they leave enough ambiguity for listeners to fill in the gaps.

Fans of Ms. Allen have been hoping to get a closer look at the receipts on the cloth she wraps herself in onstage, in the hopes of verifying some of their conjectures. Some have described the look as her “revenge dress.” But according to Anna Fleischle, a creative director of the “West End Girl” tour and its set designer, that label misses the point.

Ms. Fleischle is known for her work as a set and costume designer. She met Ms. Allen in 2021 when the singer was the lead actress in “2:22 Ghost Story,” a play in London’s West End for which Ms. Fleischle was the set designer. A challenge presented by the “West End Girl” tour, she said, was translating the emotional arc of the album into a visual world with distinct scenes that don’t liken the performance to a re-enactment.

What is Lily Allen actually wearing onstage?

The material Ms. Allen pulls around herself is a long piece of green Lycra that the creative team spent months developing.

“The idea for me, really, was to have something in the song ‘4chan Stan’ that Lily can pull and get more and more and more out,” Ms. Fleischle said. She added that, to her, the cloth is representative of the seemingly endless process of uncovering details of a partner’s betrayal, a feeling Ms. Fleischle likened to scrolling through an endless social media feed.

Are the receipts real?

Ms. Fleischle declined to say whether the images printed on the cloth are based on real receipts, describing them instead as an “artistic interpretation” of Ms. Allen’s lyrics.

“It’s a way of speaking about the search for truth and it’s interesting to see that the metaphor itself encourages a sense of searching or questioning in the audience as well,” she said.

The imagery echoes a moment in “4chan Stan,” when the album’s central character discovers a receipt for a bag from Bergdorf Goodman, the luxury department store.

Fans have tried to zoom in on photos to read the receipts printed on the fabric, attempting to determine whether they correspond to real events.

Ms. Fleischle pushed back on the “revenge dress” framing, suggesting the garment and the album itself could be interpreted more broadly.

“We only call things like that revenge when a woman is involved,” she said.

What was the process behind creating the set design?

The show unfolds like a play, with Ms. Allen performing the songs in chronological order. The stage is designed to resemble a home, one inspired partly by the Brooklyn townhouse that Ms. Allen once shared with Mr. Harbour. (The house was sold in January.)

The space first appears polished, then as the performance continues, the rooms are more disheveled until the stage is nearly bare by the end.

Audiences often feel as though they know celebrities, Ms. Fleischle said, and “that we know what’s going on.” Assumptions like that can be dangerous, she added, “because at the end of the day, we never know what was going on in someone’s life or how they feel.”
