Newsmax was seemingly busted for providing false coverage of President Donald Trump’s economic record.
Labor Department data released Friday showed the U.S. economy lost 92,000 jobs in February, nudging the unemployment rate up to 4.4 percent, but “Wake Up America” co-host Sharla McBride was apparently supposed to tell viewers the economy added those jobs.
“Welcome back, so we are back on ‘Wake Up America’ with some breaking news,” McBride said. “As last month’s jobs report was just released moments ago, with the economy adding 92,000 jobs in February.”
“Actually, we lost 92,000 jobs,” interjected co-host Rob Finnerty. “That’s all right, we lost 92,000 jobs.”
“Okay,” McBride continued. “So that was wrong in the script. Sorry about that.”
The “breaking news” chyron shown onscreen during the exchange underlined the incorrect claim, stating “economy adds 92K jobs in February.”
“Those numbers also include a 4.4 percent unemployment rate during a very volatile time for the U.S. economy,” Finnerty said. “That’s both numbers are slightly worse than analysts expected. Now, of course, the U.S. job market also or stock market taking a big plunge. So how long can we expect the war’s harsh economic effects to last? Let’s ask our next guest, executive director of Unleash Prosperity, Tim Dozier, and financial markets analyst and author of Planet Ponzi, Mitch Feierstein.”
