One Victim of the Austin Bar Shooting Was a 19-Year-Old College Student

One of the victims who died in a shooting on Sunday that killed two people and injured at least 14 at a bar in Austin, Texas, was a 19-year-old college student.

The identity of the victim, Ryder Harrington, was confirmed by his father, Michael Harrington, in a brief phone call on Monday. The shooting, which was being investigated by the federal authorities as a possible act of terrorism, occurred just before 2 a.m. near Buford’s, a bar popular with college-age patrons that is a short distance from the University of Texas at Austin’s campus.

In addition to the victims, the gunman, identified by officials as Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old naturalized American citizen from Senegal, also was killed by the police.

Mr. Harrington, from Austin, was a student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock and a member of the school’s Beta Theta Pi chapter, according to a social media post from the fraternity. He joined the fraternity in the fall of 2024.

“Ryder was a beloved son, brother and friend whose kindness and presence touched countless lives,” the post said. “Ryder had a rare ability to truly enjoy life to make people laugh, to make moments feel bigger, and to make ordinary days unforgettable. If anyone embodied what it meant to live fully and love deeply, it was Ryder.”

The fraternity was scheduled to hold a candlelight vigil on Monday evening.

Mr. Harrington’s father declined to comment beyond confirming his son’s death. Mr. Harrington’s older brother, Reed Harrington, said on social media that he was “the best mix” of his family.

“It is unfair, to say the least, that my little brother was only given 19 years on this earth,” he wrote. “Watching the man he had become, and seeing all the lives he touched, leaves me certain that this world was robbed of a great future.”

The identity of the second victim of the shooting was unclear on Monday morning.

As of Sunday, five of the 14 injured people who had been transported to the hospital were discharged. Two others were in good condition, according to a statement from St. David’s HealthCare, a local hospital system.

One of the injured, Karan Bhakta, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Texas at Austin, said he had been enjoying a night out with friends when a bullet grazed his scalp. His injuries, which were minor, were treated at Ascension Seton Medical Center.

The status of the other six injured was not known on Monday, although officials said on Sunday that three of them were in critical condition.
