Underscoring Hollywood’s reputation as a place for transformation, the ceremony known for three decades as the Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Sunday under a new name: The Actor Awards. That wasn’t the event’s only change. For the awards show’s 32nd annual installment, held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, organizers also implemented a wardrobe theme for the red carpet: reimagining Hollywood glamour from the 1920s and ’30s.
How might the focus on Jazz Age and Art Deco fashion collide with modern red-carpet trends like method dressing and bared flesh? Perhaps the best answer to that question came with the arrival of Teyana Taylor: Her strapless gown with a long sequin skirt evoked both the nude female form and the shimmery facade of the Chrysler Building. Sequins, along with beading and feathers, were flourishes that many attendees embraced to nod to the carpet’s wardrobe theme. Others did so through headpieces and furs.
Even if some attire did not telegraph as ’20s or ’30s, the fashion was mostly elegant — and occasionally political, with a few attendees sporting the “ICE OUT” pins that have been a recurring accessory this awards season. Of all the looks on the Actor Awards red carpet, these 14 were some of the most memorable.
Teyana Taylor: Most Chiseled!
The “One Battle After Another” actress’s silvery gray Thom Browne gown had a bustier painted to resemble a female torso, giving her the appearance of being carved from stone.
Sarah Pidgeon: Most Tulip!
Pleats in the skirt of the “Love Story” actress’s Balenciaga dress made its shape resemble that of a spring flower.
Matty Matheson: Most Beetlejuice!
In chalk-stripe suiting, the chef and actor, a star of “The Bear,” conjured the wardrobe of a character known for wearing graphic stripes.
Emma Stone: Most Twin Set!
Sleek met sensible in the “Bugonia” actress’s metallic lavender Louis Vuitton dress and matching lavender cardigan.
Sheryl Lee Ralph: Most Inkblot!
Black, white and gray swirls gave the “Abbott Elementary” actress’s Saiid Kobeisy gown the look of inky marbled paper.
Connor Storrie: Most Choker!
Instead of a collared shirt, the “Heated Rivalry” star wore his Saint Laurent suit with a different kind of collar — a Tiffany & Company diamond choker.
Megan Stalter: Most Milanese!
The “Hacks” actress seemed to be celebrating (or skewering) Italian style: She wore a slinky animal-print dress that she characterized as a Versace knockoff, and paired it with big sunglasses, a fur stole and a cigarette.
Chase Infiniti: Most Stalk of Wheat!
Josephine Baker, the Jazz Age entertainer, was an inspiration for the “One Battle After Another” actress’s body-hugging Louis Vuitton look, which involved a headpiece and was the golden color of wheat.
Demi Moore: Most Ostrich!
An ostrich’s plumage came to mind when the actress, a star of “Landman,” arrived in a black Schiaparelli gown with an explosion of white tulle at the back.
Tyler, the Creator: Most Himself!
Trapper caps are something of a signature for the rapper and actor, a star of “Marty Supreme.” So are scout uniforms, and his tan shorts suit resembled an elevated version of one.
Odessa A’Zion: Most Medusa!
The “Marty Supreme” actress’s hairstyle of serpentine coils went well with the loose fringe of her Giorgio Armani bodysuit.
Jenna Ortega: Most Moth Eaten!
One could be forgiven for thinking that, with its frayed edges and distressed patches, the Christian Cowan slip dress worn by the “Wednesday” actress was something she had found buried in an attic.
Quinta Brunson: Most Checkmate!
Wearing a black-and-white Gabriela Hearst dress with sculptural shoulders, the “Abbott Elementary” actress recalled a glamorous chess piece.
Jon Gries: Most White Noise!
Beneath his dark suit, the actor, a star of “The White Lotus,” wore a T-shirt with a blurred grayish print that brought to mind white noise on a TV screen.
