JD Vance ‘can’t be happy’ with Trump splintering MAGA by attacking Iran: former advisor

According to a former Trump adviser, Vice President JD Vance is likely privately uncomfortable with the president’s military assault on Iran, which killed its leader and destabilized the Middle East, creating division within Trump’s political base. Trump’s bombing campaign, which began Saturday and continued into Sunday, has angered many supporters who backed his 2024 re-election partly on his stated commitment to avoiding overseas military entanglements. Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton told Politico that Trump’s unpredictability raises serious concerns about what comes next, and there is no clear indication of any strategic planning for the conflict’s trajectory or resolution. This development poses particular complications for Vance, who is positioning himself as Trump’s potential successor in 2028 and cannot afford significant political damage. Vance has consistently presented himself as an isolationist, making the Iran military action—with no foreseeable end—potentially damaging to his political future. Bolton expressed his assessment of the situation: “It’s still hard to understand why he [Trump] did it, because there’s a risk there. I don’t think there’s any denying that.” He added: “And I think he’s already at risk of further fragmenting his base. By the way, for the isolationist in particular, can you imagine what JD Vance is thinking now? He can’t be happy.”
