Israel has launched a “preemptive strike against Iran,” Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz said, declaring a special state of emergency across the country. The strike was launched “to remove threats to the state of Israel,” Katz said, adding that a missile and drone attack was expected against Israel immediately. Several explosions were heard in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. Israel’s Aviation Authority said it had closed Israel’s airspace to civilian flights. The U.S. government has not commented on the strike, which comes after President Donald Trump has surged the U.S. military presence in the region in recent weeks while pressing Iran in talks to curb its nuclear program.
