What Were Your Favorite Moments From the 2026 Winter Olympics?

Did you watch the 2026 Winter Olympics?

If so, what do you think were some of the standout moments? Was it Alysa Liu’s gold-medal-winning figure skating performance or Ilia Malinin’s crushing collapse? What about the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey wins? Did you watch the stars of “Heated Rivalry” carry the Olympic torch?

In “Highlights From the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics,” The New York Times features some of the most iconic images from the past three weeks.

From Saturday, Feb. 21:

Johannes Klaebo of Norway competed in his sixth cross-country skiing event of the Games on Saturday. After 31 miles, Klaebo earned his sixth gold medal, the most ever by an athlete at a single Winter Games.

From Friday, Feb. 20:

For the men in the aerials qualification, big air often meant big crashes.

From Thursday, Feb. 19:

The final of the women’s singles figure skating event is one of the marquee nights of the Winter Games. Alysa Liu captured the United States’ first gold in the event since 2002 during an evening of near-flawless performances.

It was medal day in women’s hockey and both games came down to three-on-three overtime. Canada was barely two minutes away from gold but the United States mounted a stunning, come-from-behind win, denying their archrivals a sixth gold medal in the sport.

From Wednesday, Feb. 18:

Jens van ‘t Wout of the Netherlands had won two gold medals in these Games, but he compared his bronze in short-track speedskating to winning the lottery. That’s because he shared the podium with his brother Melle, who won silver, less than a tenth of a second behind Canada’s Steven Dubois.

Students, read the entire article, and then tell us:

  • If you followed the Winter Games, what did you think were some of the most outrageous, inspiring, heartbreaking or unexpected moments? Pick one and tell us why it stuck with you.

  • Are you a fan of the Winter Olympics, or do you prefer the Summer Games? Which events do you most enjoy, and why?

  • Have you tried any of the sports in the Winter Games, such as hockey, skiing or figure skating? If so, what was your experience like? Would you ever want to compete in them at a high level like in the Olympics?

  • Why do you think so many people find athletic feats so moving? Are there any athletes you admire for their talents, their back stories or their attitudes toward competition? Tell us about one.

  • What did the Olympics mean to you this year? One Times Opinion guest writer said that watching the Games brought home the difference between patriotism and nationalism. Another said it was a “much needed injection of awe” during a time of disturbing news. How would you describe your own experience?
