12 Unforgettable Looks at the BAFTAs

A confluence of events in London on Sunday put it at the epicenter of the style map: As designers held shows for London Fashion Week around the city, movie stars made their way down the red carpet at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs, held at Royal Festival Hall.

The BAFTAs, known as Britain’s version of the Oscars, featured all of the finery you might expect to see at such a rarefied event: black tie, big jewels, ball gowns. But there were also sartorial flourishes that gave the awards local flavor: men in Scottish highland dress, for instance, along with a blue duffle coat worn by a certain bear.

Of all the looks at the BAFTAs, these 12 were among the most memorable.

Chase Infiniti: Most Plum Fairy!

There was something magical about the way the skirt of the purple Louis Vuitton gown worn by the “One Battle After Another” actress seemed to float above her ankles.

Tilda Swinton: Most Skunk Feet!

Black shoes with white stripes down the middle finished off the actress’s men’s-wear-inspired Chanel ensemble of cropped suit jacket and high-waist trousers.

The Princess and Prince of Wales: Most Prom Night!

As a prom queen and king might, Catherine and William entered the BAFTAs hand-in-hand wearing coordinated outfits: Her blush-pink gown had a burgundy velvet waistband that matched the color of his suit jacket.

Chloe Zhao: Most Golden!

When the “Hamnet” director hit the carpet in a metallic Gabriela Hearst gown with a frilly skirt, the title of a hit K-Pop song came to mind.

Paul Mescal: Most at Ease!

By unbuttoning his band-collar shirt and rolling up the sleeves of his Prada suit jacket, the “Hamnet” actor conjured an easy elegance.

Teyana Taylor: Most Peek-A-Boo!

The “One Battle After Another” actress wore an oxblood Burberry confection with a high collar that obscured her face, and a high leg slit that offered a glimpse of her thigh-high boots.

Renate Reinsve: Most Decent Exposure!

Showing skin has become standard on red carpets. In a strapless Louis Vuitton gown with midriff cutouts, the “Sentimental Value” actress did so more tastefully than some have.

Alan Cumming: Most Swishy!

The actor, who hosted this year’s BAFTAs, evoked the eclectic style he is known for as the host of the American version of “The Traitors,” swishing down the carpet in an ombré fringed ensemble accessorized with a starburst brooch and colorful swirls of hair.

Timothée Chalamet and Aaron Pierre: Most Double Vision!

Both actors were dressed in black double-breasted suits, black shirts and black bow ties. Setting them apart were subtle details: peak lapels for Mr. Chalamet (who wore Givenchy); a shawl collar and sunglasses for Mr. Pierre (who wore Boss).

Paddington Bear: Most Signature Look!

The furry character stuck with the basics — red hat, blue duffle coat — that have made him instantly recognizable in Britain and beyond.
