Traveling This Weekend? Here’s What to Know About the Snowstorm.

A major winter storm, possibly bringing blizzard conditions, is expected to cause travel disruptions across much of the Northeast on Sunday and Monday, including at major airports from Boston to New York and Washington.

Several airlines, including Delta, American, United and Southwest, have issued travel advisories and are waiving change fees for passengers whose itineraries are affected.

Amtrak also said it might cancel or reschedule trains on some routes on Sunday and Monday, citing “dangerous weather conditions.” In addition, bus lines that serve the Northeast, including FlixBus and Greyhound, issued weather advisories.

Here’s what travelers need to know.

Which airports will be affected?

Airports from Maine to Virginia are expected to experience severe weather. Airlines and airports encouraged travelers to check their flight status before beginning their trips.

In New York, Kennedy Airport warned that it expected “significant travel impacts” from the snowstorm. LaGuardia Airport urged travelers to check regularly with airlines as the storm develops.

Boston Logan International Airport said that it expected delays as de-icing crews deal with the weather. Two Washington-area airports, Dulles International and Reagan National, issued snow advisories.

United Airlines said in a statement that it was “preparing for extreme winter weather and snow” at its Washington and Newark hubs, as well as at other airports it serves along the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Delta Air Lines said it was “processing cancellations at East Coast airports,” including its hubs in Boston and at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. Delta also said that it would automatically rebook passengers and that passengers can make further changes online.

The airlines said they also expected service at airports in Philadelphia; Baltimore; Providence, R.I.; Hartford, Conn.; and Norfolk, Va., to be affected by the storm.

Are airlines waiving rebooking fees?

Yes. The major airlines are waiving the difference in fares when rebooking flights from airports that qualify. Each airline has listed cities where service may be disrupted.

If an airline cancels or significantly delays a flight, travelers may be eligible for refunds or credits.

Will trains be affected?

Yes. Amtrak said it was “making service adjustments to some routes” on Sunday and Monday. It also said that customers on affected trains “will be notified directly of any cancellations or adjustments.”

What about buses?

Greyhound said that it was “proactively canceling service” in some areas and that it would “make additional adjustments as needed.” It said it would notify affected passengers via text messages or emails and also post updates on its website.

FlixBus, which, like Greyhound, is owned by Flix SE, said that rides in the Northeast “may experience delays or cancellations.” It also said that customers who were affected would be notified via text messages or emails.
