Political analysts and observers thrashed a “slack-jawed” House Republican on Monday after he gave an interview to Fox Business about President Donald Trump’s immigration operations.
Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) joined former House Republican Jason Chaffetz on Fox Business on Monday to discuss the ongoing negotiations over Immigration and Customs Enforcement reforms proposed by Democrats. Emmer said Democrats are being “intellectually inconsistent” by trying to get ICE agents to identify themselves while simultaneously pushing back on federal voter identification laws.
Emmer’s comments came at a time when the White House and Congress are at odds over ICE reforms. Democrats have proposed a series of reforms they want implemented before they vote to support more funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, has rejected the proposed reforms, Reuters reported.
The Republican’s comments didn’t sit well with several analysts, who shared their reactions on social media.
“Yes, he’s evil. But don’t forget: He’s also deeply, deeply, deeply idiotic,” author and copyeditor Denjamin Dreyer posted on Bluesky.
“One thing I’ve learned in the last couple of decades is that there can be instances of stupidity so intense that they cause me literal physical pain. I’m not even sure what the physiological mechanism, but it’s real,” journalist David Roberts posted on Bluesky.
“Oh, okay. I’ll bite,” journalist Radley Balko posted on Bluesky. “The right to vote is enshrined in the Constitution. The ‘right’ of armed federal cops to arrest, beat, and kill people with anonymity is not.”
“It’s consistent with the fucking Bill of Rights, you slack-jawed fascist toadie,” writer Hugh McDonnell posted on Bluesky.
Emmer: “Another reform they claim they want is they want ICE agents to identify themselves, to show identification. But they don’t want identification for voters in elections. I mean, this stuff is just intellectually inconsistent.” [image or embed] — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) February 16, 2026 at 2:07 PM
