President Trump’s top advisors reportedly warned him that making a deal with Iran on its nuclear program is historically “difficult to impossible.”
Trump asked special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner what the chances were of reaching an agreement with Tehran, according to a senior US official, Israel’s Channel 12’s Barak Ravid said on Telegram Saturday.
The pair told the president history shows the West has never been able to strike a positive deal with the Islamic Republic leaders, but that they would continue to “take a tough line” during negotiations, Ravid reported.
“If they agree to what we are asking for, we will give you the option and you decide,” the two diplomats reportedly told Trump.
The US has been trying to hammer out a deal with Tehran to limit its nuclear capabilities and avoid heading into a war, but a first round of negotiations in Oman this week failed to produce an agreement.
A second round of talks, which will include Witkoff and Kushner, is planned for Tuesday in Geneva.
Trump has vowed to use military force if the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime doesn’t iron out an agreement with the US, threatening Thursday that Iran would face a “very traumatic” moment.
