“I own a lot of baggy clothes,” Poppy Jacobs, 21, said while discussing her ensemble of loosefitting layers on a Thursday in early January. “I like to clash a lot, as well,” she added, naming the actress Helena Bonham Carter as one of her main style inspirations.
Helping her to stand out on Houston Street in the West Village of Manhattan, where she was walking with her mother, were voluminous reddish-brown curls, which brought out the rust coloring of her jacket. Her hair and outfit gave her a look that was both hip and unbridled.
She and her mother were visiting New York from Europe: Their family home is in London, and she is studying political science at a college in Amsterdam. When asked if she was wearing anything of particular importance, she immediately reached for her handbag. It was a Poppy bag from Coach, she explained, and it had her name printed all over it.
She had bought it on the resale platform Vinted, she said. “I was like, ‘It needs to be mine.’”
