Representative Mark Amodei of Nevada said on Friday that he would retire at the end of his term next January, becoming the 31st House Republican to announce plans to leave Congress as the party faces possible midterm election losses that could cost it the majority.
Mr. Amodei added his name to a long list of more mainstream Republicans who have found themselves isolated and outnumbered on Capitol Hill, where President Trump’s iron grip and demands of unquestioning loyalty have pulled the party to the right and made life difficult for those with even a hint of an independent streak.
He is also among more than a dozen committee leaders who have announced plans to retire, underscoring how even those with powerful perches and years of experience would rather leave Capitol Hill than continue serving — particularly if they will be forced to do so in the minority.
Mr. Amodei, who was elected in 2011 and is the sole Republican representing Nevada in Congress, leads the appropriations subcommittee overseeing the Department of Homeland Security, a coveted post that gives him control over a vital slice of federal spending.
“I came to Congress to solve problems and to make sure our state and nation have strong voice in the federal policy and oversight processes,” Mr. Amodei said in a statement on Friday. “I look forward to finishing my term.”
His retirement is unlikely to sway the race for control of the House; his district is solidly Republican and likely to remain in the party’s hands.
Mr. Amodei was the 16th House committee head to announce plans to leave Congress, including Representatives Jodey C. Arrington of Texas, who leads the Budget Committee, and David Schweikert of Arizona, who leads the Ways and Means oversight subcommittee.
Eleven of the retiring House members are running for governor, while eight are seeking Senate seats. One is pursuing an attorney general job.
In an era when many Republicans have refused to even allow for the possibility that Mr. Trump could be wrong about something, Mr. Amodei has at times stood out for his willingness to question the president.
In 2019, he became the first G.O.P. member of the House to say that the whistle-blower complaint against Mr. Trump that would ultimately lead to his first impeachment warranted an investigation. (He would later vote, with every other Republican, against impeaching the president for abuse of power.)
More recently, Mr. Amodei was among the first Republicans to publicly criticize Mr. Trump’s immigration crackdown following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis. He told The Nevada Independent that a “pivot” in tactics was necessary, “because regardless of what side of immigration enforcement you’re on, we are not in a good place right now.”
And Mr. Amodei, the co-chair of the Public Broadcasting Caucus, found himself at odds with Mr. Trump last year as the president sought to cancel funding that Congress had appropriated for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He was one of only four Republicans to vote against the bill, which passed anyway.
Mr. Amodei, an Army veteran and a former lawyer, began his political career in the Nevada Assembly and was later elected to the state senate.
He has had little trouble hanging onto his seat after winning a special election in 2011, securing re-election with 55 percent of the vote in 2024.
