  • Tesla filed two new trademark applications related to the Roadster, its electric sports car.
  • One shows a sleek design with three minimalist lines. The other shows a stylized version of the word “Roadster.”
  • CEO Elon Musk previously said the company was targeting April 1 for a demo.

Tesla is only a few months away from its planned Roadster demo, and it might be getting a fresh new logo to boot.

The automaker filed two new trademark applications on Tuesday with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. One of the filings shows a sleek design featuring three minimalist lines that appear to form a vehicle.

The second application is for the styling of the name. The company submitted protections for “Roadster” in an all-caps styling with a stretched shape and segmented letters.

Per both filings, the logos haven’t yet been used on commercial vehicles.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben wrote in a blog post that companies often file trademark applications on an “intent to use basis” ahead of a public launch.

“By filing early, Tesla locks in a nationwide priority date, preventing third parties from attempting to register the same or confusingly similar marks after the logos are publicly announced,” he wrote.

A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

The electric-car maker ramped up work on the Roadster last summer, Business Insider previously reported. Designs for the Roadster that were seen by insiders last year showed a two-seater with butterfly doors. At the time, a source with knowledge of the issue said the vehicle was at least two to three years from production.

Elon Musk has hyped up the revamped Roadster over the past few months. He has said the vehicle will be able to fly.

In a January interview, Musk said “if safety is your number one goal, don’t buy the Roadster,” adding that it would be the “best of the last of the human-driven cars.”

The Tesla CEO said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that the new Roadster will be unveiled on April 1, joking that April Fools’ Day will give him “some deniability.”

“I could say I was just kidding,” he said.

He had previously said Tesla planned to unveil the vehicle by the end of 2025.
