3 Killed as Vehicle Crashes Into Grocery Store in Los Angeles

At least three people were killed and four others were injured on Thursday when a driver lost control of her car and rammed it into a grocery store in Los Angeles, the authorities said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the collision around 12:10 p.m. in the city’s Westwood neighborhood.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, Lyndsey Lantz, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said in a news release.

Four other people have been taken to a hospital, two with serious injuries and two with minor injuries, the department said.

The identities of those who were killed and injured were not immediately clear.

A woman driving a silver Toyota Prius struck a cyclist about a block from the grocery store before losing control of her car and crashing into the market, officials said.

Capt. Anthony Espinoza of the Los Angeles Police Department called it “an unfortunate accident” during a brief news conference.

The cyclist was not seriously injured, and medical professionals were evaluating the woman who was driving the car.

The majority of people who were injured were customers at the grocery store, Captain Espinoza said. The car plowed into the bakery section of the store, a 99 Ranch Market.

Several people were trapped under the car when the Fire Department arrived, Ms. Lantz said.

Two people refused further treatment at the scene, Ms. Lantz added.

The grocery store is a few blocks from the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. No U.C.L.A. students were hurt or killed in the crash, Captain Espinoza said.

There was a flurry of activity on Thursday afternoon outside the market, which sits on a corner and faces a busy intersection in Westwood.

The intersection was cordoned off, keeping onlookers and members of the press at a distance. The sedan and the site of the crash were blocked from view by two large fire engines, and a white tent was being used to cover the victims.
