Another House Republican bows out of re-election as GOP leadership braces for midterms

Another Republican in the House of Representatives announced on Wednesday that he will not seek reelection this fall.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) said in a statement that he will not run again during the midterms. Loudermilk has served Georgia’s 11th Congressional district since 2014.

“I believe it is time to contribute to my community, state, and nation in other ways,” Loudermilk said in a statement shared on social media by Politico’s Kyle Cheney. “Therefore, I have decided not to seek reelection and end my current term in Congress.”

Loudermilk joins a growing chorus of Republicans who have either resigned or decided not to seek reelection during Trump’s second term. Other lawmakers on that list include Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Michael McCaul (R-TX), according to data from Ballotpedia.

Loudermilk’s announcement also came at a time when experts anticipate a strong Democratic showing in the midterms. The party recently picked up a key victory in a Texas Senate race that saw a 50-point swing by Latino voters from Trump to Democrats.

Democrats also won a special election for a Congressional seat in Houston, bringing the Republican advantage in the House of Representatives down to just one vote.
