In a private meeting with wealthy donors, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) revealed that he warned President Donald Trump that he would face an election “bloodbath” were he to continue to pursue his tariff policy, a plea that was met with a stern reaction from Trump: “F— you, Ted.”
Cruz’s remarks were revealed Sunday by Axios, which obtained an audio recording from a Republican source.
“Trump was in a bad mood – I’ve been in conversations where he was very happy. This was not one of them,” Cruz can be heard saying in the leaked audio to a room of donors, Axios reported.
“[I said to Trump,] Mr. President, if we get to November of [2026] and people’s 401(k)s are down 30% and prices are up 10–20% at the supermarket, we’re going to go into Election Day, face a bloodbath. You’re going to lose the House, you’re going to lose the Senate, you’re going to spend the next two years being impeached every single week.”
“F— you, Ted,” Trump apparently responded, Cruz could be heard telling donors in the audio recording.
In the audio, Cruz could also be heard ridiculing Trump’s branding for the day he kicked off his so-called reciprocal tariffs, “Liberation Day.”
“I’ve told my team if anyone uses those words, they will be terminated on the spot,” Cruz could be heard saying to donors. “That is not language we use.”
Another target for Cruz during the donor meeting was Vice President JD Vance, who he attacked as being a mere creation of right-wing figure Tucker Carlson, both of whom he blamed for the ousting of Mike Waltz, Trump’s former national security advisor.
“[Waltz] supported being vigorous against Iran and bombing Iran — and Tucker and JD took Mike out,” Cruz could be heard saying on the leaked audio.
