Fox News anchor Jesse Watters casually suggested on Tuesday night that not only could the United States annex Greenland at will, but they could also seize control of the island of Bermuda.
Watters, a firebrand who has been accused of dropping casual racism and sexual harassment, laughed at the horror from European leaders at President Donald Trump’s escalating threats to seize control of Greenland from Denmark, a critical NATO ally of the United States.
“Isn’t it hilarious listening to Europeans lecturing us about a land grab, when Europe colonized the entire world?” said Watters. “Now they change the rules, after they lost their power and empire?”
“What Europe doesn’t understand is that Greenland is an island in North America,” said Watters. “You hear that? North America. And we have dominion over the entire Western Hemisphere. Europeans can’t just have colonies right off the coast of Maine. We let the British have Bermuda because it’s cute, but if we needed Bermuda, we’d take it. And the British would let it happen.”
Trump has repeatedly demanded that Denmark sell Greenland to the United States, claiming the country cannot protect the island from Russian and Chinese threats and saying that America needs access to the island for military purposes — something America already has.
The tension has risen so fast that even some Republicans have privately begged Trump to move on, and one of America’s most conservative Catholic archbishops has said U.S. servicemembers could have a moral obligation to refuse orders if Trump invades Greenland.
