‘Finding Her Edge,’ Plus 8 Things to Watch on TV This Week

Between streaming and cable, viewers have a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, Jan. 19-25. Details and times are subject to change.

Figure skating and the Great White North

If skating and yearning were what drew you to “Heated Rivalry,” and you’re searching to fill a hole in your heart the size of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, the new series “Finding Her Edge” might be the perfect antidote. Adapted from Jennifer Iacopelli’s young adult novels, the story follows Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys), a competitive skater who finds herself in a fake dating trope when she has to pretend to be in love with her on-ice partner Brayden (Cale Ambrozic) for the sake of a sponsorship. The story is also loosely based on Jane Austen’s “Persuasion.” All eight episodes of the season will be released together. Begins streaming Thursday on Netflix.

If what you really miss from “Heated Rivalry” is Hudson Williams’s Canadian accent, the new reality show “Canada Shore” might be for you. The series is a spinoff of “Jersey Shore,” this time taking place at a beach house — yes, Canada has beaches — in Kelowna, British Columbia, where 10 Canadians meet and spend a summer together. And, there will be a familiar face since Snooki (of the Jersey edition), will be dropping in. Begins streaming Thursday on Paramount+.

Serums and heists

The television creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy is back with a new series, “The Beauty,” this time starring Evan Peters (a longtime Murphy collaborator) as an F.B.I. agent who is investigating deaths caused by a sexually transmitted substance that turns people, well, hotter. Ashton Kutcher plays Byron Forst, the tech billionaire who is backing the drug. The first three episodes of the season will be available to stream at once, followed by weekly drops. Wednesday at 9 p.m. on FX, and streaming on Hulu.

In the new series “Steal,” Sophie Turner plays Zara, your average employee at a pension-fund investment company whose whole life gets turned upside down when the office is stormed by thieves, and she and her co-worker Luke (Archie Madekwe) are held hostage. All six episodes of the show will drop at once. Begins streaming Wednesday on Prime Video.

A chef, a comedian and the Fab Five walk onto television screens …

The 10th and final season of “Queer Eye” is coming back to our screens this week. The fab five — Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, Karamo Brown and Jeremiah Brent (who replaced Bobby Berk after the eighth season) — are headed to Washington. Continuing with the show’s established format, each episode will feature a “hero” who is given a lifestyle makeover by the group. This season will be five episodes long. Begins streaming Wednesday on Netflix.

Matty Matheson, whom you might know from “The Bear,” started his cooking show, “Just a Dash,” on YouTube in 2019. Last year, Netflix acquired the streaming rights to those episodes and started producing new ones. In this third season, Matheson is back to his usual shenanigans, which include traveling the world with his team and cooking up some good food. Streaming Tuesday on Netflix.

Mel Brooks began his career on the variety program “Your Show of Shows” in 1950. Brooks, cocreator of the sketch “The 2,000 Year Old Man,” and in 1999 lwon a Grammy for best comedy album, with Carl Reiner, for “The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000.” Now, the two-part documentary “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man” explores his life and relationships over his long career in Hollywood. Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio. Thursday at 8 p.m. on HBO and begins streaming on HBO Max.

Going live

Do you ever have an anxiety dream in which you’re climbing a skyscraper with no ropes, safety equipment or nets? Well, Alex Honnold, a rock climber known for his free solo ascents, is tackling Taipei 101, the tallest skyscraper in Taiwan, in “Skyscraper Live.” Streaming live, it is estimated to take 90 minutes to two hours for Honnold to get to the top. Friday at 8 p.m. on Netflix.

The stakes are lower, though still exciting, for the reboot of “Star Search.” The live-streamed singing competition show is hosted by Anthony Anderson, with Jelly Roll, Chrissy Teigen and Sarah Michelle Gellar as judges. The live element will allow for fan votes, which will help dictate who moves on in the competition. Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Usher and many more singers got their start on the original run of the show, so we might be about the watch the next generation of performers who sell out stadiums. Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Netflix.
